Building Haiku: ok, so what did I just do?

Forum thread started by scrawler on Sun, 2011-09-11 02:56

Hey guys,

I just finished cross compiling Haiku according to some nice instructions I found on the archlinux wiki (which, in turn, were taken for the most part from here). each step completed without a hitch, and I finally issued this command:

$ jam -q @alpha-anyboot

it too finished without a hitch. Now all I see that looks like a bootable image is haiku-boot-cd.iso and haiku-boot-floppy.image. both are way too small and don't work.

So where did I go wrong? did I specify the wrong target for jam? If I did build a working image, where did it go?

Thanks for your help. I'll get this eventually...

(I mailed this to the haiku@freelists.org mailing list and got a vacation message in German)

Problem booting Haiku from USB drives

Forum thread started by ddavid123 on Wed, 2011-09-07 16:39

I have a 16 gigabyte USB thumb/flash drive and an 80 gigabyte USB external hard and Haiku will not boot from either of them. I have the option to boot from usb drives enabled in the B. I. O. S.. I have to load bootman from the cd and then tell it to boot from the usb drive. I suppose this is a good alternative, but I don't think this willl do as R1

Missing symbols and serial port

Forum thread started by BeJay on Mon, 2011-09-05 19:14

Hi after a long absense I've returned to the BeOS opps! Haiku with Alpha3 and I've been attempting to install my favourite software. I've copied Gobe Productive over from my old Zeta 1.2 disk (yes I do have a seperate license) and I'm pleased to say that that it works. However, I've just tried to install personal assistant and get the message "Could not open Personal Assistant (Missing symbol:_12BMailMessage)" - get the same message attempting to open BePlan. (Similarly I when I attempt to open BeatWare writer (which worked on R5) I get another missing symbol message _free).
I've also attempted to sync with my old Treo 600 through the serial port but when I use Palm reflections I get no serial port number. Does A3 have a serial port driver?

Any practical help to get some of these old favourites working would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards BeJay

a possibly stupid question about updating

Forum thread started by scrawler on Mon, 2011-09-05 18:20

hey all,

I have r1alpha3 installed, and I also just downloaded a nightly snapshot and put it on a stick. I renamed the system directory on r1alpha3, mounted the usb and copied the nightly's system directory over. Is that an ok way to update? what am I missing? I just read about somebody doing something similar, but I can't find the post.

once again,

thanks for your patience...

Hey cipri, I tried to download your PDF Veiwer from the haikuware site but get an "illegal download" error message! I really need working PDF veiwer for my Haiku since lots of articles I read are .pdf format...did you take down the zip file? I notice not many people vote for your app but I would vote for it. Could you post working link to your PDF Veiwer? Thanks :)

ralink2860 wireless troubles

Forum thread started by scrawler on Sat, 2011-09-03 20:42

Howdy, Haiku guys,

I read an article recently about how to install Haiku in virtualbox. I saw a presentation on Haiku at the last Florida Linux Show. I had head of Haiku even before that, but never did anything about it. I'm running Haiku in a qemu vm right now (typing this in it), and just put r1 alpha3 on my eee 901, Everything seems to be working fine on it except that I can't get wireless working. I have /dev/net/ralink2860/0 visible in the network monitor applet with "no link" after it. I followed the guide, "joined" my essid, provided the passphrase, and nothing. My wireless network is encryped with WEP.

I ran install-wireless-firmwares before this, but I don't think it provided any firmare for my card.

any ideas? Not having wireless is pretty much a show-stopper.

Thanks!

Haiku R1 alpha3 fails to boot on Asus A8V-VM, Athlon-64 3200+

Tried the ISO and anyboot. Bootloader starts running dots and then REBOOT! Funny thing is that when I start the bootprocess from PLOP Boot Manager (there's a option to boot from CD) the process runs further than if I start it from cold start BIOS boot device selection menu.
