Haiku R1 alpha3 boot failed on specific netbook hardware

Forum thread started by joten on Fri, 2011-09-02 00:41

Hello there.

I tested haiku-r1alpha3-anyboot copied to an SD-card as explained in the doc "Making a Haiku USB stick" (on Windows):

(1) On my personal netbook, a Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 (with the HDD replaced by a OCZ Vertex 2 SSD).
=> It did not work. After the BIOS has finished I can shortly see "Starting system", but than immediately after that, without the possibility to press the space bar with any effect, the following error message appears:

*** PANIC ***
mmu_init(): Failed to add physical memory range 0x7f4e20000 - 0x7f5bb0000

Press key to reboot.

I also tested, unfortunately all with the same result, "*** PANIC ***":
- the SD-card via a USB-card-reader
- the image copied to an IDE-HDD, booted via USB
- changing the SATA controller setting from "AHCI" to "compatible"
- removing the SSD

(2) On another notebook, an HP Compaq 6720s, it booted without a problem with the same boot device, the SD-card.

Any suggestion for a fix, workaround or steps to clarify the matter or bring it further?

Matroska video not played correctly

Forum thread started by enzo on Mon, 2011-08-29 08:30

Hi,
I tired to watch movie in the matroska format. It looked very odd. I can watch only the part of the movie. The other part was out of the display.
When I entered the fullscreen mode there was overlapping - a part of the output lied on the other part.

I am guessing this can be joined to how the virtual screen works.

Upgrading Haiku?

Forum thread started by OldTimeyJunk on Sat, 2011-08-27 16:44

How would I upgrade Haiku to, for example, when Alpha 4 comes out without losing Apps, Files etc.
I did read something about it - can I just pop in the CD and it'll write over my System folder?

Accidently removed network applet from tray.

How to restore it?

"/dev/net/rtl8139/0" is not a WLAN device.

Forum thread started by OldTimeyJunk on Fri, 2011-08-26 23:21

Tried again and again and again, but I cannot get the Realtek RTL8139 driver to work.

I've followed the instructions here: https://www.haiku-os.org/guides/daily-tasks/wireless

But when I type "ifconfig /dev/net/rtl8139 list" into the terminal, the output is "ifconfig: '/dev/net/rtl8139' is not a WLAN device".

What am I doing wrong??

BTW, I'm using Haiku a3

Realtek Wireless Help!

Forum thread started by OldTimeyJunk on Fri, 2011-08-26 21:36

So, just recently installed Haiku on my USB stick.
BTW, I'm really pleased with it - I think Windows and Linux may be in jeopardy on my HDD :D.

I've read that Wireless works with WEP.
My driver (which works in Linux BTW) is a RTL8139. But, I cannot for the life of me get it to work.
The Network dialog gives me no clue.

Here's what happens...

I press the Network Icon;
Open Network Prefrences;
Choose "DHCP" mode;
Then it says on the taskbar "/dev/net/rtl8139/0: Configuring";
After a while it goes back to saying "/dev/net/rtl8139/0: No link";

I don't know if it's because I'm fucking stupid but I just cannot get the wireless to work.

I know I'm doing something wrong, can someone put me in the right direction...

Default video driver

How do I know whether Haiku uses native or generic (vesa) video driver?
