Haiku A3 won't install to USB.

Forum thread started by belfasteddie on Thu, 2011-06-23 09:42

I asked a question several months ago re installing Haiku to the hard drive which failed although the Live cd ran on the comp ( P4 Laptop ). I ended up with a screen dump and although was asked to upload the screen dump I didn't bother.
I now have a different laptop and again Haiku runs on the Live cd , so I decided to load it onto a USB drive. All went well until about the 2/3 stage of the install when it stopped and gave me a screen dump. The comp was frozen at this stage. So, I would like to ask how does one upload a frozen screen dump?
Also, I use WPA on my wireless and I notice that A3 only uses WEP. Does anyone know when WPA will be up and running. ( No, I don't want to change to WEP ).

Cheers,
Eddie.

Haiku A3 Install, plus

Forum thread started by TedH on Thu, 2011-06-23 09:11

I've held back for some time now on Haiku as I've been winding down my business and now am retired. I did have a post on my blog about the software being Alpha (which I didn't realise before) and stopped using it altogether. Thing is, I like it.

Before I install the latest Alpha 3, I have some questions. First off I'm aiming for a minmalist system with no extra software except the basics (Entire OS, web browser and maybe email and one or two others) - the machine will be for travelling with. I hope it does wireless?

  1. I assume I will have to wipe the disk that I have Alpha 2 on at present. Yes? Or will the A3 install overwrite all the old A2 stuff?
  2. I see Python and Perl. Are they needed at all?
  3. When I wipe programs (games etc), are there any that I should keep, otherwise they all go.
  4. I know some programs are simply drop in the trash and they are gone, others may have an uninstall. Is there a list that tells me which is which, so I don't screw up anything?

Thanks for any help, Ted

Can't boot Haiku from USB stick in OS X

Forum thread started by gbsaab on Thu, 2011-06-23 06:46

I can't get Haiku to boot on my iMac from a USB stick. I'm using a late 2009 iMac 27" Core i5 and OS X 10.6.7.

I followed the instructions for installing the (AnyBoot) image file on the USB stick and restarted my iMac. It didn't recognise the USB stick as a bootable volume.

Some posts here mentioned reFit. So, I partitioned the USB stick, installed reFit, installed Haiku on another partition and restarted. This time, the reFit menu appeared and the Haiku volume was visible but it would not boot.

The first time, it did nothing for 30 minutes before I gave up.

Second time, I held down the shift button before trying to boot the Haiku volume. I got an error message "No operating system present".

What do I need to do to get it to boot ?

I will try Haiku in VirtualBox and from a CD but, I expect the CD won't boot either. I'm missing the clues.

Many thanks.

alpha 3 installation problems

Forum thread started by gaukler on Wed, 2011-06-22 23:12

I've burned an anyboot CD, and have initialized a partition sucessfully. Installation has failed 4 times, with a "Error: Device Timeout" message, twice for file 12836 typedef-asection.html, and twice for file number 12936 ARM-NEON-Intrinsic.html.
The Live CD seems to be working- I'm sending this from WebPositive in LiveCD mode. I've tried a few applications, like Wonderbrush, and they work. I've been running Alpha 2 on this system since it came out, and haven't made any hardware changes.

Fan control?

Forum thread started by twix on Wed, 2011-06-22 20:12

Running Alpha 3 on a HP NC6220 laptop using a live USB stick. Everything works except the fan control. Somehow Haiku turns fan control off. Needless to say the laptop got really hot ! Is there something that I am missing? Turning ACPI off solves the problem. However, I cannot find any references to fan control problems.

Network driver issue

Forum thread started by arctic1 on Wed, 2011-06-22 07:48

Hi people :)

I'm testing the R1 Alpha3 release - just for fun; I come from the Linux world, but I think Haiku is pretty cool.

Anyway, I installed as a Vmware (v3.1.4) virtual machine - no problems there. Haiku starts up just fine but I cannot get a a network device. From listdev I have:

device Network controller (Ethernet controller) [2|0|0]
vendor 1022: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]
device 2000: 79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE]

But the preferences->network dialog has an empty adapter dropdown list and an empty network dropdown list. Also the /dev/net directory is empty.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

/A

Edit:
I found the "Devices" app. In the "Detailed" tab of the network controller it lists "Device paths" and "Driver used" as "Not implemented". Does that mean the kernel was not able to find a driver?

Oh, and in the mouse preferences there is some weird behaviour when I select focus mode. I cannot make the choice from the dropdown list entry with the mouse, I have to press enter for the app to register my choice.
