Haiku on Eee 900

Forum thread started by Kristho on Sun, 2011-01-16 00:02

Hi,

I try to get Haiku on a spare Eee 900, and it seems to boot fine. But when I come to the desktop it only shows a blue background and a cursor - nothing more happens, is this a known problem? I used the anyboot alpha2 image.

This is just for toying around - not a critical system :D

Thinking about leave Linux and try Haiku: does it currently fill my needs?

Forum thread started by vanfanel on Thu, 2011-01-13 15:47

Hello there

I'm new to the forum, and to Haiku and BeOS in general. I'm an old Amiga userin the PPC and 68K front, and these last five years I've been a GNU/Linux user on the X86 front, too.
The last wto years I've spent most of my computer time optimizing my Gentoo Linux system to a minimal, loand, lightweight and fast one with preemptive-multitasking kernel compiled with support for my very own hardware, BFS (a great CPU scheduler wich really make my emulators to work in a constant an reliable way with very small sound buffers), etc...

However, this system lacks something. It's not the same as MorphOS and AmigaOS: they are incredible OSes in PPC and 68K, they are desktop OSes and they both make me feel "at home", while Linux is...well, not the same. It's cold, and even if I'm not a total newbie by now, it stills feels complicated. It's like having a mainframe in my room, not a real "home computer".

So I've two alternatives to try (or keep on with Linux, of course): AROS and Haiku.

So, I'm exposing my initial needs here, and I hope you guys can tell me if Haiku is for me as of today:

-Does it support intel-HDA in macbooks and mac minis (2009)? A silent system is not fun.

-What's the video backend Haiku uses? Is it a decent one?
*It supports vsynced smooth screen refresh. I HATE tearing. I can't stand it. Vsync requires an accelerated framebuffer, or a decent VESA one.
*It supports custom video modes. (and I mean custom resolutions AND refresh rates: Can I define 59.61HZ on a 1280x1024 mode, for exampe?)
*Can SLD use that backend? I don'n mind if I have to specify the backend for SDL in each app I run, but I need souch a backend to be available.

-Does the video backend have support for Nvidia 9400M based cards? It's OK if there's an accelerated framebuffer for Intel stuff, but I need it to work on my computer.

-Is it possible to self-compile MAME for Haiku? I use customised sources relying on custom video modes.

-Does it support BCM43XX wireless network controllers in some way?

That's all, I think...

thanks!

PD: Note accelerated 3d stuff is something I don't want/need. I just need a VERY flexible accelerated 2d support. Custom refresh rates AND perfect smooth vysnc-ed display is mandatory for me.

No sound on Dell Inspiron B120

Forum thread started by fountainhead on Sun, 2011-01-09 22:13

Hi guys! I'm brand new to this OS and I've got it set up on my Dell Inspiron B120 laptop. Everything's working nicely so far except for the sound. I can play wave sounds but nothing actually comes out of the speakers. Midi music files return a "MediaConverter" error.

Here's what I got from listdev:

device Multimedia controller (Audio device) [4|3|0]
vendor 8086: Intel Corporation
device 2668: 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller

When I ask for the audio driver in the terminal it says "hmulti."

Strangely, when I go to Media preferences, HD Audio, Output, it only says "Left Headphones." And yes, I tried plugging in headphones to no avail.

Any idea what's wrong here? Is the built-in driver just not compatible with my integrated audio? Thanks in advance for your help!

Screen resolution

Forum thread started by civ247 on Sat, 2011-01-08 20:50

HI I have a large screen with a stanard resoluition of something like 1900x1200.

The "screen" app only allows up to 1280x1024 which makes everything look quite poor.

I understand I may be able to change this during bootup by holding "space" or "shift" and specifying manually however I cant get the boot menu to come up.

Any ideas why? Im using GRUB to boot.

Wep and shutdown failure

Forum thread started by Giova84 on Sat, 2011-01-08 16:24

Hi, i'm a new Haiku user!
I've installed Haiku (revision 40074) on my HP Pavilion dv4000. All works perfectly: the video card works with his own driver and wifi too works!
And for now i never see a KDL (in the R1 Alpha2 Version i saw various KDL!)
But i have a trouble with shutdown (and restart too): the system hangs when the shutdown window say: "asking other process to quit". So i have to turn off the notebook by the power button! So, at the next reboot all my settings are lost!

In the various lines of the syslog file i see this error message:
"KERN: module: Search for drivers/power/acpi_embedded_controller/device_v1 failed."
Is about the shutdown failure?
How can i resolve?

I have another question about the wifi connection: if i set my router with wep (64 bit) security, the wireless card won't connect (with the open wifi, works perfectly).. Why?
I've tried: " ifconfig /dev/net/iprowifi220/0 join mywifi mypassword" but doesn't work.. Is from here: http://www.haiku-os.org/guides/daily-tasks/wireless
And i've also tried to create the text file ""wireless_networks"" in /boot/common/settings/network/ (obviously with the name of network and with password too) but doesn't works for me..

Thank you very much!!

p.s: I'm sorry for my non perfect english..

Installing Problems

hi everyone

i am having some issues installing haiku on my laptop. i can get as far as the splash screen and see the icons light up then i get a panic notice. it says it cant find a boot partition. now do i have to have a boot loader already installed or just a partition with a specific format? and I'm using the ISO image because my laptop doesn't support usb booting. and how do i get into safe mode? i read somewhere i had to hold down the shift key, and when i do that i see select safe mode options but no boot in safe mode. thanks in advance.

USB flash stick encryption?

Forum thread started by belfasteddie on Thu, 2011-01-06 16:56

Hi, I have installed Haiku to an OCZ flash stick ( the model is the rugged type, wrapped in thick rubber). My wife and I like to go on holiday for two or three months at a time and would like to take this stick with us so we can log on in a computer shop and not have to worry about Viruses, malware etc. Security being the main target re logging onto the Bank.
Question: would it be possible to encrypt this stick?
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

cheers,
Eddie.

PS: Not a complaint, but why does Haiku on a USB stick ( A very fast one at that ) take three times as long to boot compared with Haiku on the Hard drive?
