Suitable Partitioning Tool??

Forum thread started by Paspie on Sun, 2010-11-07 14:47

Since I'm now really interested in Haiku I am attempting to install it on the legacy PC I have before my main PC, a 9**MHz Pentium 3 196MB Dell Dimension. Fortunately I was able to burn the ISO on a disc using software that did the job properly, as I got the Haiku setup to run, booting from the disc. Originally I thought Windows 98 (which is currently on the machine) had it's own partition, which I could write over with Haiku. Obviously I had guessed incorrectly.

Now here's my question ... I have searched the internet for free partitioning software and the software I found was EASEUS Partition Manager. The first problem I found was no matter how long it took, it would never get part the splash screen. Also, I have no idea if it would suit burning an ISO disc, popping it in the Dell and partitioning the hard drive using that.

So since many of you guys have had to use such software, which one would each of you recommend? The Dell doesn't have hardware that allows it to connect to the internet (it does ... but we don't have a long enough ethernet or phone cable). Once that is done I can check out Haiku ... I would love to try out this new operating system.

booting/installing troubles

Forum thread started by Kyllopardiun on Sat, 2010-11-06 03:25

Hello there, well I wanted to try the haiku, because I was a r5 user.

Actually I've got a lot of tries without any lucky.

I've tried to make a usb stick to run Haiku (by the guide), but it didn't work
neither with dd for windows, or with win32diskimager.[both provided by the guide]

Actually the dd one, worked better if I can say it, as it formatted my usb, and wrote something on it
but after when I tried to boot from it, my computer said : invalid boot disk

I've also downloaded the iso for make a cd [the previous attempt was the anyboot obviously]
but, I don't have any cd available for me write, and I have a rewritable dvd,
but it didn't boot [I wrote the disk with poweriso 4.0] changing just the cd to dvd.

does it may be the reason why it didn't boot?

If I remember well, when installing r5, i got to press space bar and choose a few options for get the system running.

My computer:
Lenovo 3000 N200
[almost everything it's from intel also the graphic card]

Cannot get haiku to boot on my system

Forum thread started by Telemin on Fri, 2010-11-05 16:26

Hello All,

I have picked up Haiku with the intention of perhaps helping out with the development somewhere, as having played with it in virtualbox for a while I feel it is extremely well suited to my needs and wishes for a day to day OS. Currently however I cannot get haiku to boot on my system (hardware as below) at all.

I have tried:

R1-Alpha2 ISO -> boots on virtualbox in passthrough mode, but not on hardware

R1-Alpha2 anyboot on usb -> will not boot on hardware

Several recent + Latest Nightly builds for raw usb -> will not boot on hardware

In all cases I believe my system is recognising the boot medium as I often see a row of periods seemingly "counting up" in the top left corner but nothing more happens, but then I get "No signal input" from the monitor and after ~10 seconds the system reboots.

Is there some basic incompatability that I have missed out on and if not is there some way to debug these problems?

I have a working copy of linux which can be used for access to BeFS partitions but I can't guarantee being able to do any serial console work as I only have the one PC and would have to borrow a friends to do it.

Thanks in advance

BOINC Client And project apps

Forum thread started by Troll81 on Fri, 2010-11-05 09:19

Are there any plans to release new BOINC Client for haiku? And what about project apps? I've been trying to use BOINC on Haiku with a SETI app but it never finishes the workunit :( I know some of the project have their source open. I really would like to have my HaikuBox crunch some WU's

Location of Desktop Applets after boot

Forum thread started by paulfxh on Wed, 2010-11-03 23:46

I have my Haiku (R1A2) desktop configured with a number of Desktop Applets (LaunchBox, Mail Status, Clock, WorkSpaces and Network Status).
Commands to launch all of these applets (other than Mail Status) are included in /boot/home/config/boot/UserBootscript.
However, while most of the applets appear after boot in the desktop location where I had left them before the previous shutdown, Network Status refuses to do so and I must manually drag it to where I would like it to be.
Is this resolvable?

access to and from Ubuntu

Forum thread started by Ulys on Wed, 2010-11-03 22:23

Hello,

I have installed both Ubuntu and Haiku on my old Laptop.
Ubuntu 10.10 has functionality a usual, that means both wireless and wired connections, Haiku has only wired network.

As I found out Ubuntu does not see any Haiku drive, the partition where Haiku resides is from type "unknown" and on the other hand Haiku does not see the Ubuntu drive or partition from type Ext4.

I would like to get access from Haiku to Ubuntu and perhaps vice versa.
My intention is to get files to complete Haiku or other stuff by Ubuntus wireless connections where wired network is not available.
One solution is of course using memory sticks.

What has to be done to get Haiku able to access the ext4 filesystem?

Best regards
Manfred

NC or MC available?

Forum thread started by Ulys on Tue, 2010-11-02 20:15

Hello,

is there something like Norton Commander or Midnight Commander available to move around the filesystem?
"cd" and "ls" and so on are useful but I like this comfortable enviroment provided by MC.

Best regards
Manfred
