Using anyboot image directly on HDD partition without USB

Forum thread started by ondrejd on Sun, 2010-09-26 11:49

Hi, can anybody tell me if I can use anyboot installation image directly on HDD partition withtout using of USB? I mean using dd directly on second partition because I'm unable to boot from USB stick (even my laptop says that it supported). Can I copy this image to the free partition make it bootable and use it?
Thanks.

Why can't I make a Desktop shutdown icon?

Forum thread started by paulfxh on Fri, 2010-09-24 23:18

I used this command in a terminal

ln -s /boot/system/bin/shutdown /boot/home/Desktop

to provide an icon on the Desktop that I intended to use (from launchbox) to get a 1-click shutdown (or reboot).
However, when I click it I get this message
The application "shutdown" might be blocked on a modal plane
When I hit the "Kill application" in the same message box, the computer shuts down without problem.
However, if I run the command

/boot/system/bin/shutdown

in a terminal, the computer shuts down without any error message.
What's going on here?
Also, I cannot find any "reboot" application (equivalent to /boot/system/bin/shutdown) but it must be there somewhere but probably under an unexpected name.

File Sharing Guide

Forum thread started by stellarpower on Fri, 2010-09-24 18:24

I, like many others, would like to share files between the computers in my network. I know this topic has been discussed quite a bit on the forums.

Basically, I would like to ask if anyone could write an official quick guide on how to set-up and maintain a secure ftp network between Haiku and other machines so that all users would be able to understand the process. It would be nice of this could be included in the user guide :)

Thank you very much.

No sound after Alpha 2 install on Dell E520

Forum thread started by paulfxh on Thu, 2010-09-23 13:29

I've installed Haiku R1 Alpha 2 on a Dell Dimension E520 (3GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 7300 LS).
In general it works well and, because of the great WebPositive browser, Haiku feels to me for the first time like something I could use on a day-to-day basis.
However, I have no sound. The sound card is Intel 82801H (ICH8) which should work with the native HDA driver.
I've followed along with the recommendations here (http://www.haiku-os.org/community/forum/troubleshooting_sound) and certainly the HDA driver seems to be loaded but still no sound.
I've even tried OSS and appropriately disabled the HDA driver but still.........silence.
Note that I've never installed any version of Haiku on this machine before so I can't say if sound functioned with earlier versions
Any advice?

[R1/Alpha 2] Black screen after rocket icon

Forum thread started by nereus on Wed, 2010-09-22 23:26

Hello

Just to report that when booting off a USB key that works fine with Linux, I get a blank screen after the rocket icon is lit up.

I tried booting while keeping the SHIFT key, with no result. Tried again while keeping the SPACE key down, same result.

This is an entry-level MSI/Micro-Star MS-7418 Wind PC desktop with an embedded Intel® 945GC NorthBridge chipset:

www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodtmpspec&maincat_no=134&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&...

Is there a work-around, or is this hardware just not compatible with the latest alpha?

Thank you.

New Install does not boot - Live CD works fine? ( Dell Vostro 200 4gb )

Forum thread started by mfitzp on Sat, 2010-09-18 13:54

Hi I downloaded and tried the Live CD and Haiku worked fine, looking really good so I thought I'd go through with a full install. I have Debian on this machine so adjusted the partitions - originally putting Haiku on an extended partition but after this not working it is now on it's own primary partition. I've set up Grub to boot with the chainloader and it finds the partition fine and gets to the Haiku splash with the row of icons.

Boot continues until the image of the disk with the leaf at which point it hangs.

I've restarted and tried enabling all the Safe Mode options (and various combinations thereof) with no luck. Turning on the debug messages during boot gets a lot of repetition including lines such as:

ata error.RecoverLostInterrupt 0x50

...and various mentions of usb with lost interrupts/handling etc.

Does this sound familiar to anyone and is there a fix?

Also, is it possible to dump the boot debug messages somehow in order to post them here in more detail?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Install from anyboot usb

Forum thread started by tim on Thu, 2010-09-16 20:44

I'm running the r1alpha2 anyboot image (md5's checked out) from a usb stick on an Acer Aspire One (AOA150, from the 8.9" series). The live os runs beautifully (kudos btw), but it never shows the option to install during boot. (as in http://www.haiku-os.org/get-haiku/installation-guide) It just goes directly from the black splash screen to the desktop. I tried booting in safe mode just to see but it didn't show up there either. Any suggestions?
