Improvements to Haiku.

Forum thread started by ddavid123 on Sat, 2011-07-02 03:56

For those using a 32 bit computer with more than 4 gigabytes of RAM, would not a PAE haiku build be appropriate? I would like to see a 64 bit version of Haiku for those with a 64 bit processor! And maybe, a port of Haiku to ARM, and PowerPC! Also when you click on the "Haiku" icon the pane opens showing the files in the file system. When you click a folder, another pane opens. Why not just redraw the pane to show the contents of the directory instead of opening a new pane?

Perhaps at the beginning of the beta cycle, more attention should be focused at developing more end-user programs as well as renaming some of the ones that already exist. Looking at the apps available, many of the names give no clue as to what the app does. Apps like "Pe", "People", "Poorman", and "Vision" in my view give no clue to it's function! Yes, there are icons to the left of the name, but for people like me who can't see small icons like that the only option is to run them all to discover their purpose. Please accept these "complaints" as constructive criticism! I offer my opinions and views in the hope that Haiku gains from them and becomes even more usable!

I am happy to see all the improvements that have gone into Haiku R1 Alpha 3! The system "feels" smoother and looks more polished. I can't put my finger on exactly what has changed, but it looks much better than Alpha 1! I have been a Linux user for almost 6 years, and it still amazes me how the community can create such awesome and powerful systems! As far as Linux goes, it's greatest strength may also be it's greatest foe, endless choices! I like the idea that every part and parcel of the Haiku system is developed by the same community and is guided by the same goals and passion!

Word Processor on Haiku

Forum thread started by Giova84 on Wed, 2011-06-29 18:52

I was looking for a Web-based Word Processor to use inside Haiku. Google Docs doesn't work with WebPositive.. So i find this: https://writer.zoho.com/editor.im : work perfectly with Web+ . Without registration we can only export in every format; with registration, instead, we can also import docs.

p.s: this is not spam, it's just a suggestion ;-)

Website: Making Haiku USB Stick - Mac OS improvement

Forum thread started by Munchausen on Tue, 2011-06-28 18:36

The guide instructs the user to use this command:

sudo dd if=path/to/haiku-anyboot.image of=/dev/disk[x] bs=1m

Writing in this way to /dev/disk[x] is _VERY_ slow. As in 45 minutes on a fast USB 2 drive slow. Simply changing to

sudo dd if=path/to/haiku-anyboot.image of=/dev/rdisk[x] bs=1m

will speed things up by a huge amount, like a couple of minutes to copy the whole image.

It would be nice to be able to make comments or suggestions like this on the web page itself, as I am not sure this will actually get to the right people.

Perhaps a few people could try it to check it works, and if so then update the guide?

Haiku home page and information

Forum thread started by edmundf on Thu, 2011-06-23 11:32

As an old BeOS user looking here after many years I experienced a lot of unnecessarily
difficulties that could easily be fixed by a few additions on the Haiku web page.
First of all I don't see any planning for future releases and when it might be expected that
Haiku is suitable for everyday use.
Second I don't see a link to software for Haiku, of course that should be on the home page!

After a while searching the internet I found “http://haikuware.com/”
I tried to install a few drivers and programs and found out nothing I tried worked!!
I have no words for that! After downloading some programs with the by default installed
web browser, I got two files for most downloads, one ended with .zip and one ending with
-0zip or something???
Sometimes after unpacking there was a new folder named “common” but I didn't notice
that, in that folder sometimes there was a little info but never complete so that I was able
to install a program and run it.
Firefox didn't do anything until I remembered ( from the BeOS time ) I had to move all .so
files to somewhere....
I tried a few thing and managed to get it started but this is not the way anyone want to waste time to just install a program.
I did not yet find any info on how and where I should install anything.

So I would suggest, make a link to where haiku software can be found and include some information on HOW to install anything with each program.
Divide that programs that actually work under Haiku and the ones that you don't know if
it works. Remove the ones that don't work!
It will save us an lot of time and frustration, I really hope Haiku grows to be an useful OS
with all the ease of use and speed we are used from BeOS.

Haiku Software Centre

Thought these new mockups from Ubuntu might provide some food for thought: http://omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/06/the-new-ubuntu-software-centre-mock-ups-h...

I know from a recent mailing list discussion that Axel hates the idea of an HTML interface, but something like this could be quickly implemented relative to a native interface and is beneficial to users in that it provides a similar experience to online shopping sites like Amazon with a media rich interface. Certainly in terms of getting something together pre-R1 it seems like a more realistic option. Also might help spur application development and could potentially eventually even be used as a revenue generating opportunity for Haiku Inc. if the platform ever attracts any commercial applications.
