Haiku Reference System

Forum thread started by dos on Sun, 2010-05-23 20:25

I think it would be a good idea if the Haiku development community could come up with a "reference system" of all known-working hardware, so early adopters can get the best experience possible by building their own HaikuBox. Just a list of easily available current/modern hardware maybe with links to Newegg or a similar site.

I've tried to install from the ISO on many systems and have never gotten it to boot, I'd really like to build a cheap system to run it on so I can stay updated with the Haiku scene without using emulation. Just a thought.

little menu thing in deskbar

Forum thread started by civ247 on Fri, 2010-05-14 17:22

Hello All,

When I open an app like WebPositive I get an application entry in the deskbar.

I find the the little menu that open when you want to select the application really annoying. It doubles the number of clicks I need to get to my application.

For me the functionality is mostly useless because tracker is in browser mode and never opens more than one window, while WebPositive opens everything in new tabs so there will rarely be more than one entry to select.

Question - is it possible disable this functionality somehow?

If not, I noted that both right and left click on the item brings up the same menu. Can one of those clicks not immediately bring the first application in the menu to the top?

If this is just me being ignorant and doing something wrong feel free to correct me!

Thanks!

zoom button functionality

Forum thread started by civ247 on Fri, 2010-05-14 17:12

Hello All,

First of all thanks for all your work on Haiku and getting it this far - Ive been waiting for this release since the first alpha.

However I have some comments about the zoom button.

From the 'apps' folder:

Tracker: When I click the zoom button it changes between two sizes but doesnt maximize. (one seems random the other fits to contents) - can one not maximize?

Webpostitive/Wonderbrush: The zoom button displays the application fullscreen - I think most people agree that this is not ideal.

Pe/BePDF: These maximize as expected

- The double click and right click on the yellow tab i can get used to - its not wrong; just different and perhaps better because it gets rid of a couple of buttons.

- However I cant imagine that anyone thinks having three different possible actions for the zoom button is a good thing.

I know this is in the suggestion box but I have no suggestion other than that zoom should maximize and never do fullscreen

As for tracker I dont like it and would prefer to cycle between maximize and fit to contents. Is there an option to change this behaviour?

Once again thanks for all your work - im really enjoysing trying something truly different.

iphone, ipod, itouch, and ipad support?

Forum thread started by Braysen on Tue, 2010-05-11 05:21

i think it would be wise for the devs to port over the apple mobile device driver to haiku for charging and tethering capabilities. either that our build a new driver from scratch to specifically support these devices. i know that having itunes on haiku is a longshot, but i'd still like to be able to charge my iDevice and tether internet from it to my haiku device. i also know that many other people out there would also like that to. and maybe if we dont get an official itunes on haiku, maybe (if we get some apple mobile device driver ports or clones) we can get an itunes clone to manage our music and even sync with iDevices such as iphones, ipods, and ipads, it could be called beTunes.

Devs: pppplease consider

haiku theming capabilities

Forum thread started by Braysen on Tue, 2010-05-11 05:11

i have seen some really cool mockups and heard some really cool suggestions and the comments from the developers have all pointed towards keeping it exactly the same as it is now. while i don't think its a bad idea, i just think its a boring one. i feel that the theme should stay the same as its specifically haiku, but us users should have multiple theming capabilities to make our os truly ours. i know that when i had vista i had purple windows, a slideshow background, custom cursors, and custom ui sounds, and now that i have windows seven i have all similar things, but seven has an easier user interface for theming, and my friend victor is always showing me is new theme or background or something with his xp. i know that the devs are cutting back on creating "modern" windows animations and theming capabilities due because they have more important things to do, but i think they should at least implement them in the os along with similar theming capabilities such as those in win or mac. i think this is a great idea but i do see why they want to keep it the way it is now so i propose that if they do listen to me and those like me that want a fully customizable os with great windows animations and transition effects, they can implement them, but have them disabled/turned off as a default so it is just the haiku theme in the beginning, just the way it is now, but allow us to customize our os and save different themes, also i think they could also have some default themes mimicking those of the default win7 and mac osx just to show off what they can do with themes.

component style multi-user allowance options

Forum thread started by masternetra on Tue, 2010-05-11 02:55

I like others suggest going multi-user, while many people maybe fine with a single user account with a system password, need I point out that there are computers that service more then one individual and number of those individuals would like to keep their private information, private from the other users?

That aside, I propose having account settings for multiple user allow a more thorough customization. What I mean is allow for separate allowances for say updates installation Program installation, and other admin features to create custom admin accounts. Example you could allow the normal accounts to apply updates but not install regular programs or mess with system files. You could create a Light Admin account that can install programs, apply updates, but can't touch system files, and of course you can have the root like account or you can have regular accounts not be able to apply updates and so on. All the options would be selectable from account settings, all admin options would need to be set by the designated super/root account (or the system password prompt would need to be satisfied if the account making the modifications is set for it), so you can mix and match. Their could also be a setting for prompting a system password for those who want to structure their account system so there is only one user with a system password. Going this route would most certainly be a better option as it gives the user/owner control over how accounts are setup and what they can do and how many they're are. Additionally it could be made so that applications can be allowed and/or not allowed to be used by certain accounts. My 2 cents.
