do you think that haiku will even implement multiuser support?

PCMCIA support

Forum thread started by 4nntt on Fri, 2009-11-27 02:49

I would like to request PCMCIA support in Haiku.

I've heard PCMCIA wasn't officially supported by BeOS R5, so I imagine support for it isn't slated until Haiku R2, but there are a lot of ancient laptops out there that Haiku would breathe new life into who's only networking option would be through PCMCIA cards.

I have an old Compaq Armada M300 which would make a great little "netbook" type device, and runs Haiku fantastically, but it has no internal network card or USB 2.0 port.

Saving chute

Forum thread started by muda on Wed, 2009-11-25 20:43

Got the idea from another topic, drag-save. Drag-save has been a 'trademark' feature of RISC OS, why not create a new one for Haiku? What's Haiku's usability trademark? Of course, attributes. There has been some talk about Sorting Chute (http://www.haiku-os.org/glass_elevator/rfc/sorting_chute), why not Saving Chute? Some use cases to illustrate...

Say, I've recorded an audio file and hit Save button. I'll get prompted for all relevant audio metdata I can fill in and the Chute puts the file where it belongs based on its properties. For example:

Save as...
ARTIST: Me, Myself & I Trio
TITLE: New Track Recorded on dd.mm.yyyy
YEAR &c...
Format:MP3
Filename: ~/music/mp3/%Artist/%Title.mp3

Note that the filename part is predefined along with variables. In this way the metadata doesn't get overlooked and the file will be immediatly visible in all queries.

Another example, I may have digged out an old document from projects' archive. I wish to reuse it for a new project:

Save as...
TITLE: Letter of Introduction
CATEGORY 1: oldproject
CATEGORY 2: papers
KEYWORDS: exhibition photography
Format: RTF
Filename: ~/projects/%category_1/%category_2/%title

The attributes would be already filled in so I would need only to replace 'oldproject' with 'newproject' and I'm done! The file is put nicely to the new project folder.

Yes, I know, there aren't many attributes for text files but there could be (look at document properties in MS Word). But even with no extended attributes for file type the chute should know where to place specific file types, for example, text documents would be placed to ~/documents by default. This might be also the case if I don't wish to provide any attribute values.

To keep it more simple, the filename and format part are hidden from the user as the file is saved using default format and to default location based on attributes. Metadata fields could also have some kind of autocomplete feature.

This functionality could also be extended to the sorting chute itself. Say, the preferences include some rules using attribute-based variables. Now, if some file from the Internets is dropped to the chute, user would be prompted for missing attributes. An easy way to gather materials for a project. And both chutes could share the preferences.

Log-structured file system

Forum thread started by nonne on Tue, 2009-11-17 02:54

What do think about Log-structured file systems? Apparently they are good for SSD and SSD will be storage media of the future, so how about a new Log-structured bfs2 or Haiku-fs for R2? There is a BSD licensed implementation of NILFS that maybe could be ported?

additional download mirror?

Forum thread started by pawlicki on Wed, 2009-11-11 07:37

Hello,

I've been a BeOS enthusiast ever since I got my hands on BeOS 5 PE. Thus, I'm very excited about Haiku and the resurrection of Be.

I would like to help out the project by donating some server space. I have a small server that I use for minor hosting/testing, and it could be used as a FTP download mirror (unlimited monthly transfer). Haiku team: please let me know if you're interested.

Hi
I am testing every new nigthly build and I'm wondering why there isn't a web broser in these builds, in my opinion it's very importan to testing various posibilities of Haiku.
Is thre a particular reason for this??

Hi there!

Just started to use Haiku! Thanks for the great system! I am a mac user and there are some convenient things in mac, which would be great to see in Haiku, as it is posited as a friendly system. First of all, almost all the applications in mac are packed in aaway, that a user sees just one single file, you just drag it to the applications folder and that is it. It is installed. Of course it is a folder with many files, but for a user it is just a single file. If it is implemented in Haiku - it would be amazing! And the second: when one has to tune the prefernces it is not convenient to go to the tracker and open new set of preferences (mouse, network and so on.) It would be great if it is one panel with all the pref icons, and when you finished with one sort of preferences you can just press the back button and choose some different sort of preferences. Like in Macs and windows - it is very useful. And of course, the biggest pity is that on my dell e5400 none of the network adapters were recognized... Neither wifi nor ethernet, so I hope to get it fixed.
