BFS: save file versions

Forum thread started by FSV on Thu, 2008-07-10 17:12

Hi!

I suggest to discuss a following thing:

In operational system VMS of computers DEC VAX there was one delightful opportunity, - OS kept all versions of files. Those are, when you wrote down the same file in the same place of file system the operation system did not overwrite an old file, and added to a name of a new file number of its version. The name of a file looked so:

File_name.file_extention:file_version_number

If the same opportunity could be realized in Haiku, it would be full DELIGHT! For clearing file system from old versions of files the command purge has been stipulated. Has been stipulated also system purge. In Haiku it would be possible to realize this idea by means of attributes and essentially to develop. For example, in adjustments it is possible to provide following options:
1. Full switching-off of storage of versions of files.
2. To specify depth of preservation of versions of files. We shall tell, to store no more than three versions. At preservation of the new version, most old version automatically to delete.
3. Do not create versions for files, which size more the than set size.
4. Do not create versions for files of the certain type.
5. Do not create versions for the files few differing on time of updating.
6. Purge files it is more or less the than set size, an interval on time of creation, etc., etc.

The Possibility of a bEEE Revolution

Forum thread started by ab5tract on Tue, 2008-05-27 15:14

I just got my Asus EEE 900 in the mail. It highlights an issue I've thought about bringing up to the Haiku community for a year or so now. I know this will show as my first post, but please don't let this dupe you into believing I'm not experienced or invested in the Haiku project.

So here comes my concerns:
Where is the HaikuBox specification? Why not choose a distinct hardware profile that Absolutely Runs Haiku? A month ago, I would have built it on the spot. Now, I'm pretty convinced the perfect target hardware is already constructed, cheap, and awesome. Enter the Asus eee. Not only is this market going to become highly competitive price-wise (track the prices of a used 2G 701 Surf over the next few months), it's also the perfect target market. People are already going to be trying a new, open source OS for the first time. There are plenty of reasons why GNU/Linux in the Debian form is antithetical to an easily configurable desktop OS (inheriting all of GNU/Linux's problems plus the glacial pace of Debian). Throw in the filtration of the for-profit Xandros distribution and you quickly realize all the .debs in all the repositories in all the world are not going to be up to date until at least a 1/4 year after major software improvements have become widely available. If a specialized EEE version of Haiku were available, who isn't to say that people who tire of the Xandros desktop wouldn't try Haiku out on the way to the (way way worse than both) Win XP? or even on their way to a better GNU/Linux distribution?

The most important benefit is, of course, that we as a community can begin running Haiku on real hardware with minimal fuss, and , minimal expense. It would have been my number one vote on the poll, that's for sure.

Look implementation

Great feature of Beos : partialy implemented in Haiku :
CTRL+ALT+SHIFT on Menu (about)

and Os looks like Mac OS (Traditionnal), Win 9x, Amiga OS ...

Rha lovely !

WINE on HAIKU?

Forum thread started by unxed on Sat, 2008-05-10 15:10

In his excellent article, "Strategy Letter II: Chicken and Egg Problems", famous Joel Spolski writes:

Quote:

Nobody is going to use your platform until there's good software that runs on it, and nobody is going to write software until you have a big installed base.

Linux overcomes this barrier by supporting POSIX architecture (making easy to port software from UNIX systems) and also by supporting win32 API through WINE.

As it is declared on the home page of the project, WINE is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix.

As WINE it is API Layer based on POSIX, may it be possible to make a Haiku port of it? It could bring haiku a great number of running software (including FOSS, as most of it now has it's own win32 ports).

I'm interested to hear from Haiku developers about this idea.

Thanks for your very interesting project!

NNTP Binary/Text Newsgroup Reader

Hey... I am curious if an NNTP newsgroup reader is on the roadmap for development. It would be nice to have one of those since I am an avid Giganews user and I just can't be without my newsgroups.

openGL based GUI

Forum thread started by uranium on Thu, 2008-04-03 00:12

why not just use openGL for Desktop (GUI) rendering and accelerator, since today graphics cards support openGL, it would be nice and fast! and we could build API for graphics shell which is universal to all OSes, because all OSes support openGL, then given some independent layer running on top of any OS, we could have working shell that would run on any OS (theoretically).

it would make easier to develop further advanced shell and GUI for Haiku, since we could test the GUI rendering on any OS, we could doing it in massive parallel progress, there's no need to waiting for kernel or underlying layer of GUI working stable.

any comments?

actually i am planning to do something like it, build universal shell for any OS based on openGL. i am planning to use linux and get rid of X replaced with the openGL shell (desktop), but since i met Haiku a few days before, it would be nice to have Haiku implement this.

GSoC CIFS implementation

Forum thread started by Master199 on Mon, 2008-03-31 15:28

Hi,

i was reading the GSoC tickets and i've got an idea concerning the CIFS implementation ticket.
I think a point "Connect CIFS" in the Mount menu would be nice.
When you choose this point, a small window pops up where you can see a list with your previous connections/favorites and 3 buttons "connect / add favorite / edit favorite (where you can also delete the connection)" or a system preference where you can add connections (edit/delete favorites) and connect it from the mount menu as subpoints, like an HDD ?

Greetings,
Daniel Weber
