Hi,

This has probably been asked, but ... I would like to see a 'basic' distro of Haiku that didnt require additional downloads. Specifically to include common tools like ssh and a functional compiler and tool chain.

One download.

Thanks.

P.S.
Do you have a browser? I havent found it yet if you do.

Mounted BFS volume ... remove some cruft

Forum thread started by bbjimmy on Wed, 2008-02-20 20:39

When one mounts a newly initialized BFS volume the system adds a home folder to the file system. This is confusing if the volume is not to be used as a boot disk, ie music files, document files, applications etc. It would be nice to mount the volume and have a link from home for "my music" and not see a new folder labeled home once the link is traversed.

currently after mounting the volume one can remove the folder from a Terminal to clean-up the file system, but the next time the volume is mounted, the bogus home folder is added back again.

Yes, BeOS did this too, but it should be fixed so that only the boot volume must contain a home directory.

Utilizing the idea of fat binaries?

Forum thread started by wing on Tue, 2008-02-19 08:24

Considering that while the x86 version of Haiku is the main concentration at this point in time, it may be advantageous to plan for the distribution of applications with multiple system architectures. I am thinking of mainly, (of course, inspired as an osx user), ppc and x86. Of course, this differs from the way Apple considers their "fat binary" system: as a hand outstretched from the future to the past.

I miss the old status page

Forum thread started by uberjuun on Sat, 2008-01-05 20:22

I've been following Haiku's progress on an almost daily basis since it first began and it used to be so much easier to get a feel for the progress of each major portion of the OS by taking a quick glance at the status page. On this page, as I'm sure we can all remember, there was clearly-organized, color-coded chart where one could very quickly see how far along each project was. The new view of this same data is not nearly as easy to read and doesn't really get to the point, so to speak. Someone please consider fixing this.

Thanks.

Handling R5 bugs the right way for Haiku?

Forum thread started by Hai_cu_be on Tue, 2008-01-01 11:29

Hi,

I keep noticing that some bugs that gets sent to "Trac" is indeed not Haiku bugs but rather R5 bugs that obviously never got fixed in the BeOS. I'd like to add one example here of one that I submitted.

http://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/1623

Now here is obviously an example where the Be engineers did it wrong and where it obviously should be as described in my bug. However, it simply got closed.

If this would've been added as an "enhancement" would it have been treated differently?

Basically what I request is for Admins to have a look at some bugs with "critical" eyes and note whether it's actually something where R5 lacks and it should be considered an enhancement instead and then closed.

GUI, Outpu texts

Please give adequate thought to the quality & understandability of the English -- instead of any slavishly/sub-consciuosly following the [not ideal] MS-ian example!

Indeed, Be favoured full phrasing and better thought-out notifications, object labels, etc., we are told -- whereas MS seems to be still stuck in a rut of over-abbreviation and phrasing that doesn't everywhere really quite express what they mean to say by it...!!

For example, what struck me just then, on seeing screenshot, is 'Apply' which would better at least as 'Apply now', if not with a different verb.
Dont make mistakes, please, of the kind Robert Szeleney did [at one stage, at least] in using 'Mount' at a juncture which _covers also unmounting_ and that sort of thing!

Better font rendering for Haiku?

Forum thread started by rdmr on Fri, 2007-10-26 19:28

Hi all,
i have found an interesting article about font rendering, which seems to be much better than ClearType IMO. I would like to ask if subpixel rendering would be implemented to haiku in near future, since most users use LCD monitors nowadays. This article provides good information
about better font rendering(especially for LCD monitors) without using patented methods. Don't know if it could be implemented without noticeable performance degrade, but the output is really awesome. I hope to see it in Haiku.

Besides that, what is the default DPI of Haiku? It doesn't seems to be 96 DPI.

Bye,
rdmr.
