make Haiku a usable OS, not a OS to run legacy stuff only

Forum thread started by pmlopes on Fri, 2007-10-12 08:10

I've been following the Haiku project for a bit and I find it quite nice to bring back to life the old BeOS. It was without a doubt a good OS back in the days and I'm sure that if it was luckier and with some more advertisement it would be really bid today.

However there are features that are lacking really bad (and this is my point of view, so please, don't see this as an attack to the project).

In my view Haiku misses one big issue to make it an OS to the people, it misses a localization kit. Something that will format currencies, numbers, text alignment, dates and the whole texts on the base applications to the language and locale of the user. I think this would break the wall of non english speakers to use Haiku.

I just discovered the Syllable one and I must say that would be great to have something similar for Haiku...

RadeonHD (open source) Linux Driver

Forum thread started by forart.it on Tue, 2007-09-18 15:38

Introducing The RadeonHD Linux Driver[/url]"]Not only is AMD providing the open-source community with their ATI GPU specifications, but they have also been partnering with Novell on the development of a new open-source display driver. We've been telling you about AMD's open-source work all month, and today the new driver is finally available for download. It is still very much a work in progress and isn't much further along than the open-source R500 Avivo driver. However, this new driver does support the Radeon HD 2000 (R600) family. This new X.Org driver is called RadeonHD and in this article we have some initial information to share with additional articles coming later in the day.

Include new Open Virtual Machine Tools

Forum thread started by kwurzel on Wed, 2007-09-12 14:49

VMware just released their VMware-Tools as open source. They are available under the BSD, GPL and LGPL license and are called "Open Virtual Machine Tools", see http://open-vm-tools.sourceforge.net/.

I think it would be a good idea to include them in Haiku, especially in the current state of development (mainly virtual images). Is this possible?

Sincerely, kwurzel

Another option for a Haiku IDE - "Geany"

Forum thread started by latte on Sat, 2007-09-08 23:31

Hi all -

I saw that there's an IDE coming for Haiku (called GeneStation - interesting name... :-) ).

There's another *excellent* IDE worth looking at for Haiku as well, called Geany - ( http://geany.uvena.de/ ). It is small, fast, very clean layout and *beautifully* designed. Well worth having a look at. I think its license is GPL ( so that may be a problem), but I just thought I'd mention it. Always good to see what's out there.... ;-).

Documentation (and a lot of it, too)

Forum thread started by GeneralMaximus on Thu, 2007-09-06 13:42

Believe it or not, Microsoft currently has the best user and developer documentation out there (don't know about Apple because I haven't used any of their stuff). A couple of years ago, when I was using Windows, I never had any problems with finding the correct documentation for VC++ and friends on MSDN, not to mention the wealth of user docs offered on the M$ website. Administrating the system was painful, but at least there was a database describing how to go through all that pain.

Sugegstions: Live CD+HWDB+Lookup+Roadmap...Phew

Forum thread started by Hai_cu_be on Sat, 2007-08-25 18:25

Lo everyone,

Seems progress is happening all over the place and I do know it's not yet time to release an Alpha. However, I'd like to bring up 2-3 things that will become increasingly important as this Alpha stage get closer.

1. Live CD
Not sure what the status is on this functionality but I definitely believe that this would be a brilliant way for people to test whether hardware plays along or not before doing a complete install. This is NOT meant to stress the issue. However, I would consider this a milestone, just as being selfhosting (even though it might not be the same size of milestone). How about adding a milestone in the Dev/Tasks section about this issue to make it easier to track?

2. HW DB?
