random thoughts on current haiku gui

Forum thread started by goldencut on Wed, 2007-08-22 09:42

There are some things that bothered me on original Beos and on many other OS' too.
These are small things but i write them down here and maybe if they bothered others too then they can be changed in Haiku...

Preferences - it's too fragmented. It's getting confusing, names are overlapping and deceptive. Mouse, keyboard and keymap - aren't these all together 'input devices', 'human interface devices', 'mouse & keyboard' or something like that? Appearance, fonts, menu, sounds and backgrounds - aren't they all together 'gui', 'appearance', 'gui themes' (if Haiku maybe gets theme support?) or 'workspace' ? Even screen and screensaver could maybe be grouped together?

Echo audio drivers

Forum thread started by forart.it on Thu, 2007-08-02 07:44

For those who are interested in, here's what the Echo Digital Audio Corporation' Software Developer Page claims:

Interested in writing your own driver for Echo’s hardware? Then you need the generic driver code. This is the cross-platform C++ library used for our Windows and Mac PCI and Cardbus drivers.

Source code is provided under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License.

Multitrack A/V suite

Well, since Haiku *shoud be* THE multimedia OS, i think that a killer application is needed (that may bring many users/manufacturers), so here's my port suggestions:

1. HyperEngine-AV, Arboretum Systems' award winning video editing software is now free, complete with full source code. Users can capture, arrange, edit and process video, audio and text in a free-form, trackless document, to create movies and slide shows. OSX, GPL

2. Cinelerra, a non-linear video editor that does primarily 3 main things: capturing, compositing, and editing audio and video with sample level accuracy. (Linux, GPL)

Fix CaPSLOCK

Forum thread started by bbjimmy on Mon, 2007-07-23 07:31

I ALWAYS hit the caPSLOCK key when I hit the a key. It would be nice if caPSLOCK only locked if the shift key waS pressed. This is the waY typewriter keyboaRDS worked -- We aLL know whaT a typewriter is don't we -- In order to place the typewriter into all caps mode one would have to press the shift key and then the caps lock to lock in the shift. There were no mistaKEN PRESSES OF THE CAPS LOCK BY HITTING IT WHEN THE A KEY WAS PRESSED AS THE SHIFT NEEDED TO PE PRESSED TO LOCK THE CAPS.

It would be GREAT if we could set an option to require [shift] [capslock] to place the computer in all capital mode.

Haiku Deskbar graphical update - see pictures

Forum thread started by Zenja on Sat, 2007-07-21 09:05

Morning / afternoon / evening.

It is no secret that eye-candy adds to the appeal of an Operating System (just ask Apple). Haiku has gorgeous scalable vector icons on the Desktop, but the Deskbar itself is still stuck in a 16x16 world. Considering that more and more people are getting exceptionally large monitors, its time Haiku Deskbar joins the 21st century, at least on the graphical eye-candy front.

I have written a proposal with several nice mock up pictures of a vector icon based Deskbar (the mockups are so hot, they should be rated 18+). Have a read, enjoy the screenshots, and please provide feedback so that we can make the best looking Operating System ever made.

Open Source (BSD) C-Media 8738/8768 Drivers

Forum thread started by forart.it on Sat, 2007-07-14 10:57

Just discovered this website:

http://cmediadrivers.googlepages.com/

It claims "This project aims at developing drivers for C-Media 8738 / 8768 based soundcards, focusing on providing a bloat-free, stable and reliable alternative to the official drivers in order to squeeze the most out of the hardware."

Hope that helps...
