cute and informative

haiku logo on the menu button. why waste it? a way to to use it maybe would be to keep the logo always the same but with every new mayor version to change the color of the leaf... silly, i know, but that way one could always say with one look to the desktop witch version is running on that specific machine(very useful also in screenshots)
and all the hundreds of haiku (version)s would be like leaves falling in the autumn, covering the dead grass (of m$ products) with beautiful colors... ; )

Haiku RC2: 64 bits only ?!

Forum thread started by greg2 on Tue, 2007-06-26 20:31

Hi,

Maybe it's not a suggestion because maybe you have already thought about it. But i haven't find any reference to it.

I have read that RC2 will not be compatible with RC1.
It would be stupid to create a 32 bits version of RC2. isn't it ?
You could directly focus on a 64 bits version.
64 bits is the (near) future ( or maybe 32 bits are already the past).
RC2 will not be release before several months/years.
Everybody will have a 64 bits processor and more than 2Go of RAM when it will be available.

Open JDK

Sorry to rehash the whole java thing, but has anybody considered a port of Open JDK to Haiku?

Let me first say, I am impressed, and as a newbie, I really like where Haiku is going, I believe it has a fighting chance. Honestly, everybody keeps battling with OS's yet (I feel) everybody forgot those who are not technical. My wife for example, just want's her computer to work, use the net, and could care less about the 'awesome' power of UNIX.

AI terminal

Just a thougt - there's some applications, that's trying to be artificially intelligent, you can chat wit them. Also some IRC bots.
So, why not to merge similar approach to command line?
Using command line could be much easier and fun :)

Office suite and pdf

Another feature I would really like to see as part of R1 is an office suite.
No mater what you use the pc for you will need to edit or see an word document or pdf.
Especially the pdf, I have to deal with one almost on a daily basis.
From time to time you might see a power point presentation or have to do your own, maybe even do some tabled calculations.
For an office suite I recommend OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/ as it offers an full office suite that covers text editing, tabled calculation, presentations, etc.
It is open source and has been ported to: Windows and all Unix based systems including Mac Os , Solaris and FreeBsd.
There are also many open source pdf viewers and editors.

NDISWrapper

Forum thread started by lxstoian on Thu, 2007-06-14 16:12

Another suggestion that popped in my head while posting about the webcam driver is using NDISWrapper ( http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/ ) instead of porting drivers from Unix systems or building haiku's own from scratch for wireless network cards 802.11[abgn].
NDISWrapper uses Windows drivers.
There aren't many open source drivers out there for this cards leaving NDISWrapper as the best choice for Linux so porting it to haiku will solve a compatibility issue that might drive away potential users.
Also why invest time and resources in developing haiku's own drivers instead of investing it in the development of NDISWrapper.
Only problem with it is that some drivers come part of an .exe so Haiku needs to be able to extract those drivers out of those .exe files.

Internet browser part of every build

I saw that basic networking works under vmware player, so wouldn't it make testing compatibility easier if I would have the ability to download beos applications straight from any page?
