Help to get more developers, using yab

Forum thread started by lelldorin on Mon, 2007-04-23 20:08

I think it will be funny to get a call to develop with yab or a competition in yab for developing haiku apps. With yab we can get some nice little apps for
better using the system and we give jan_64 some motivation to work on it :-).

Some idears:

burning app like jaba (zeta) - it is a very great burning app
text editor like stylededit
web editor
bfs image creator
iso image creator
image viewer
floppy tool
(Tools for easy using terminal apps)
...

increase the disksize of vmware image

Forum thread started by chaotic on Tue, 2007-04-17 13:01

Hello,

i am interested in testing haiku, but the disksize of vmware image is a little bit small. It is possible to increase the disksize of vmware image?

It would be better to test, also to test from programs/applications, as for example Firefox or others.

Thanks for your time,

with kind regards from gemany

Terminal mouse button functions

Forum thread started by Grackle on Sun, 2007-04-15 16:06

Sorry if this isn't the correct category for my topic, but it seemed fitting.

Today I noticed that right clicking in the terminal pastes, while middle clicking brings up a contextual menu. I realize that the right-click-to-paste behavior comes from the Windows terminal, so it might make sense to some, but middle clicking for a contextual menu doesn't. In all other places, right clicking brings up a menu. I propose that we do it that way, and use the middle mouse button for pasting. It will be a little confusing for windows users, but it will be more consistant with the rest of the OS, and it will make sense to users coming from linux (for whom middle-clicking to paste selected text is the default).

I would be willing to make that change if others think it's okay. Thoughts?

Haiku Distros Are Coming

Forum thread started by tonestone57 on Sun, 2007-04-15 14:14

I was reading some of the posts on Vasper's Blog about Haiku distros.

I noticed a few people wanted only Haiku and no distros at all.

Well, unfortunately for them, distros will be coming out. We already have Pingwinek & Vasper will also be doing his own. And I wouldn't be surprised if many more start being made.

Now, I do have 2 ideas that'll be helpful.

First idea is how to reduce the number of distros that will come out.

Haiku, CD1, will basicly be the OS with next to no real applications bundled in. Well, why not create a 2nd CD, with all the applications and programs, as installable packages. People can then either boot the CD2 or run installer on it and *select* the program packages they want to install onto the Haiku. This way, new users don't have to search for the applications, download and install them. An Application / Game CD would make things much easier for everybody (and makes a lot of sense).

CD2 should be done by a group of people working together, tested out and sent to Haiku for final approval / acceptance.

And gives the added bonus, that it *should* reduce the number of new distros (give less reason for people to create their own distro - so maybe we'll see fewer distros down the road?).

Second idea has to do with naming. There needs to be a rule (the only rule I see necessary) that the term "haiku" can not be used in the name of distros.

Ie: We shouldn't see names like:
Haiku Max
Haiku Extreme
Haiku One
Super Haiku
GNU Haiku
etc.,

Only official Haiku should use the term Haiku in its name. This should eliminate confusion with official Haiku.

Distros will eventually come and we need to be prepared for them. How many is still not known. Idea #1 will reduce the need for distros and idea #2 should eliminate confusion with which is the real "official" Haiku release to new users.

PS I don't mind a few distros (5 or so), especially if they offer different optimization and customizations. But, I really wouldn't want to see lots & lots of Haiku distros coming out.

Haiku Deskbar Leaf...Again!

Forum thread started by El-Al on Thu, 2007-04-05 22:39

Excuse me! Can we please have a leaf that changes color with the seasons?

Blue is a cold, receding color to have all year long.

Can we have an animated leaf that changes color with the seasons?

Personally, I'd like a green leaf in the summer, fading to orange/brown in the autumn and perhaps blue in the winter!!!

Please take this post with the humour with which it is intended. However, I think it's a bl**dy marvellous idea if someone could find the time to do it. :o)

Use Standard English in Command Line Interface (CLI)

Forum thread started by darthom on Thu, 2007-04-05 07:18

Do not follow the Unix and Linux style of cryptic, unintuitive commands in the Command Line Interpreter (CLI). Rather do what Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) did with their Digital Control Language (DCL) and other companies did with CPM and DOS.

Make the commands in the CLI standard English. The command for help should be, just that, HELP. To print something, PRINT. To display a directory, DIRECTORY. To concatenate files, CONCATENATE. To invoke mail, MAIL. Edit a file, EDIT. To compile a program, COMPILE. To link/bind together objects and libraries into an executable, LINK or BIND. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
