Building a Haiku System - Help

Forum thread started by eav on Sun, 2005-11-20 20:03

I don't know if my current system would run Haiku or not. It did install BeOS, but it ran at low res. in gray scale, and I could not get online. I have since upgraded the video card to an ATI All in Wonder 9600 Pro but I have not tried another install.

A Persistent Save State

Hi

I was having one of those "this OS was great, because..." type of drunken chats with a colleague recently. He was banging on about how great the Newton was. As I'm a BeOS fan, we both have a healthy laugh at each others' nostalgias, while sharing an even healthier dislike of Windows and Linux. Anyway, he was telling me about something in Newton which I though was flatout a damn good idea.

Stupid ideas that make an OS fun to use

Well, like the Haiku messages in Net+ make it more fun to use, i would like to discuss about others ideas in the same style..
When you create a new folder, in place of an insipid "new_folder", what about give it a ramdom name like "fish", "fatty" , "tomato"..

I have some idea for enhancing desktop and make it different than other OSes.

Look at this :

Glass Elevator, Idea #1 (expanded): Extensions based UI

Here's an expansion of the idea of extensions for the UI. Basically, you start with a clean UI. I think we can keep BeOS' default look and behavior for this, because it's very simple but unique (although certain things should be changed). However, the combination of themes and extensions could set it up so that it can look (and act) like any operation system GUI out there. This would make Haiku the most flexible GUI out there.

Hi, I'm new to the Haiku project. I'm an old school fan of BeOS, and I'm really excited about the Haiku project. I'm not enough of a hacker to really jump in at this point, but what I'm hoping is to get involved with R2 once R1 has been completed. I'd really like to see Haiku do amazing things in terms of performance and user interface, and it'd be great to see a user-friendly open source desktop oriented operating system.
