Haiku UI idea

Forum thread started by Joseph Grasser on Thu, 2009-10-08 20:27

To be honest, I do not like the look of the Haiku alpha release.
However, I think that this project has the opportunity to do something truly different
and ground-breaking with its UI.

My idea is rather complicated to explain, and I am not a good artist. So bear with me.

The tab at the top of windows is really interesting visually, but what if the tab were movable. I think a tab that was able to move horizontally across the top of a window could change the way we layer windows on a desktop.

Also, after having the idea of a movable tab I had the thought that a tabs location with respect to the windows edge could have an affect on what menu options are available at the top of the window.

I had the thought that the menu bar at the top of windows would disappear, and only appear as the mouse was moved close to them. This would remove menu options from windows and make the content fill more of a window.

That was my idea. If anyone is inspired by it please draw something up and show it to us.

Thanks.

Idea for Deskbar

Forum thread started by zakalwe on Sat, 2009-10-03 19:04

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I had an idea for the Haiku dock, err, Deskbar.
In current builds, when an application loads, there is no visual feedback to the user that indicates the application loading. Especially when a large application loads or the user loads multiple applications simultaneously it can give the impression nothing happens. In which case the user tries to start the application for a second time.

Haiku could use the application title-bar in the Deskbar to give the user feedback of the loading process. This can be implemented in the various possible appearances of the Deskbar.

Quick mock-up (animated gif) can be found here:
http://www.ideaspace.nl/ext/haiku/Haiku-Taskbar-loading-indicators.gif

This way an application loading indicator (in a splashdialog) is not necessary and a consistent user experience is achieved.

In addition, one can also include progress indicators in the individual window titles in the Deskbar when the application expander is used, so the user has an up-to-date overview of the tasks running in windows of applications that are hidden or in another workspace.

Ideas on Haiku Interface

Forum thread started by alexandream on Wed, 2009-09-30 05:27

Well, first of all, this is my first post to this forum so: Hello, everyone!

I've been following the news over Haiku for a while now, but I'm not actually an user. I used BeOS R5 PE for a while a loooooooong time ago (I think it was around 1999, but I can't actually remember), and been playing with a pre-alpha build for a few weeks now, though with little time dedicated to it.

Anyways, this post is about sharing a few of my ideas on Haiku's theme and interaction with the interface. I believe that, not being a regular user like some of you on this list, a few of the things I think of discussing in future posts may sound a little heretic. Please don't get your pitchforks and torches just yet, ok? :)

To start I thought of talking about Haiku's current theme. When I first tested it around a month ago, I got quite impressed about how modern some of the interface elements feel and behave, and at the sime time how dated some of the interface elements look. Most of all it's a pleasant interface to look at, but I guess it could improve.

So, before showing a small work of editing of mine (mind you, I'm no designer, I'm actually just another programmer who happen to like playing with The GIMP) I have to say I quite liked the menus and the window tab posted by John Wells here: http://www.haiku-os.org/community/forum/haiku_ui_mockup

Then I started thinking what I didn't like about Haiku's interface. Or, to be more precise, what I felt that looked aged in Haiku's interface. I came up with a mock up that is far from John's quality, but which I think shows my ideas somewhat well.

And here is a comparison, so you can see the changes in a different tab and switch back-n-forth to see the exact changes:

Well, pretty much the work was a mix of simplifying and adding complexity to different parts of the window. I decided to drop most of the gradients, and only use them where they are supposed to make some element stand out:

- The window tab still retains it's gradient (though it's there really just to take the space, John's would be a better option).

I also took off most of the separating lines, which makes the window look (to my eyes) less cluttered. Then, with most of the gradients and lines out, I decided to add a little bit of complexity to balance it all:

- Some less-flat scrollbars, based on those used by KDE on it's Oxygen theme, but much simpler, with a sunken look.

- And a higher degree of bevel added to the inside of the contents pane with the icons, together with a tiny shadow projecting to the inside of it.

I still dislike how the item-count looks in this interface, but I didn't have the time or ideas to make it better. It blends quite well, in the original Haiku theme, but stands out too much with my mock-up: does anyone have an idea of how to make it better?

Well, anyways, that is it for this post. I have quite a few ideas on interface objects behaviour in general, but I'll save it for future posts when I have more time and thought more about them.

All comments are welcome, and I'd really appreciate your opinions on the few ideas presented here. It's useful as a guide when cooking more ideas.

Haiku Theme

Forum thread started by wirwill on Mon, 2009-09-21 16:26

Spent few nights doing a bit of redesign on Haiku's theme.
Just thought I'd contribute it, maybe to spark brainstorming discussion, inspiration, or simply gag reflex.

The GUI theme itself is designed to be more comfortable on the eyes when you work long hours staring at the screen.
The wallpaper may come out really strong, but you most likely cover the wallpaper with application window(s) when you're working, so that shouldn't be much of an issue.

The GUI colour is not too bright, not too much of a contrast. Just calm, wooden brown. No rounded corners, no thick borders. Drop shadows can be implemented once the developers are ready, no rush.
It's nothing fancy, really. Just very neat and workable.
I didn't use yellow because although Haiku is inspired by BeOS, it is not confined to be just a clone of BeOS. I see nothing wrong if we use other colour(s) in this respect.

If there's enough interest/request, I can continue designing other parts of the GUI.

PS: Does anyone know where I can download Haiku's logo in .EPS and its current icons in .PNG?

Some wallpapers

Forum thread started by oscarcp on Fri, 2009-09-18 08:43

Hello! I've made some test wallpapers for Haiku, one of them for Haiku Alpha2. If the team likes any of them, you can include it in the next release without any problem. I leave here the links.

Haiku Alpha 2 (from 1024 to 1600): http://pizte.deviantart.com/art/Haiku-Wallpaper-alpha2-137390047
Haiku wallpaper I (1024x768): http://pizte.deviantart.com/art/Haiku-Wallpaper-Test-I-137248486
Haiku wallpaper II (1024x768): http://pizte.deviantart.com/art/Haiku-Wallpaper-Test-II-137298356
Haiku wallpaper III (1600x1200): http://pizte.deviantart.com/art/Haiku-Wallpaper-Test-III-137388665

I have the source files, so I can make any resolution if needed. Hope you like them!

Chamaeleonidae GUI

Forum thread started by stargater on Tue, 2009-08-04 07:43

Hello People,
long time i thinking about new points for haiku, i talk with user, coders from other os, we talk about themes vs no themes in haiku.
So my result is no themes in haiku, but haiku need a handfull stuff for make he desktop personality.

My idear is a effect from a "Chamaeleonidae".
What can this do?

the haiku desktop and here apps have a base color eg:
SetViewColor(ui_color(B_PANEL_BACKGROUND_COLOR))

So when we add a background photo, then make all B_PANEL_BACKGROUND_COLOR
littel bit transparent (60%? or setting able)

Any designer here, he make a mock-up?
Any developer here to help code this?

Pleas feedbacks ...
