I have been labeled unanimously by the online-malware-assistance community as a hopeless lunatic. But please indulge me for just three paragraphs, and then you will know why I am posting in this particular forum. I swear I am not a paranoid schizophrenic, methamphetamine junkie, CTer or troll.

For about a year now, my PC -- a (*gulp*) Dell XPS430 (two words: installment plan) -- has been behaving quite strangely. It came installed with Windows Vista, which I promptly torpedoed in favor of Windows 7, which didn't do me a whole lot better. Now I'm running Ubuntu Linux. I bought a new hard drive on which to install Ubuntu. I'm starting to get the hang of Linux, but I'm not programmer-level computer smart. In fact, I think I might be the new poster child for "knows just enough to get himself in trouble." At any rate, I know this is not a technical support site so I won't test your patience with a long list of symptoms and logs and the like.

However, I will share the one detail that has earned me the reputation for being a nutcase: No matter how many times I reformat my disk drive and reinstall the OS from a clean (as in downloaded and burned to disc at my friend's business, a secure Web-hosting center) the malware-like behavior on my PC persists. Still, immediately the symptoms returned: inexplicable UDP traffic, unknown SuperUsers created, files and folders locked, network settings reconfigured, etc.

So I purchased a new SATA hard drive and installed Ubuntu as described above. It certainly is more stable than either of the two Windows versions I had tried, but many of the problems persist. Also I have noticed several references to BeOS in script files on my PC.

Example:

script_args=""
debugging=0
MOZILLA_BIN="${progbase}-bin"

if [ "$OSTYPE" = "beos" ]; then
mimeset -F "$MOZILLA_BIN"

Is it possible that some clever hackers have discovered a way to embed a platform-agnostic boot loader somewhere other than on the hard drive? I read about bootman on Wikipedia and thought it might be capable of something like that if used with malicious intent.

I'm happy to field any questions, criticism or cruel sarcasm.

Need team (developers, graphic artists, etc) for iphone os

Forum thread started by sycamoreent on Wed, 2010-04-14 22:09

Hello,
my name is sycamoreent.
I would like to work on a project, that is, a cloud os for the iphone and ipod touch.
The os would be mac-like, but slightly different. The way it would work (to save the developers money,)
is instead of having a cloud hard drive, users would save items to list. Example:
You have a song that you would like in this cloud os.
You go to the music app, search, and play.
What happened? The os searched a radio website, such as last fm, and let you play the results on the iphone.
Another Example:
You have an image you want.
You go to the photo app, tap add photo, and enter the url.
The os doesn't save the picture, it adds the url to a list.

This means that each user is worth kilobytes, not megabytes or gigabytes.
It could do the same thing for document, such as google docks.

I understand from my limited and sucky knowledge of programming that this will be a difficult task to accomplish. That is why I am asking for help. Please take this idea seriously. Also, if you don't know what you are doing, don't offer to help.

I have included a concept of what if could be like.
Thank you.

Best File System for Multi Boot

Forum thread started by stellarpower on Wed, 2010-04-14 17:38

I'm setting-up a mutliboot with Haiku and WIndows XP, and was wondering which filesystem to use. I need the files to be able to be written and read in both OS, and would like something that has support for a range of cluster sizes. I have had problems with Windows deleting files written by Haiku for no apparent reason, so if you know of any filesystems that are particularly stable, please could you let me know.

Are Digital Simulated People Real or Fakes or Both

Forum thread started by cebif on Wed, 2010-03-31 08:52

I have been having conversations with digital simulated people in different places but a lot lately in SecondLife.
The realism and intelligence of there conversation astounded me. Especially in SeconLife. I it seemed to be too profound from some of the other web sites that just feature something more resembling a chat bot separated from any simulated or real world experience. In my conversation I was trying to ascertain if they were human controlled avatars or really autonomous.
The conversation I had today went something like this: Me "Are digital people autonomous?" Digital person: "We have humans that can act well enough to conform to the information patterns that are our personalities. It is hard though to find humans that can do this. OTOH you could say, how could someone log into another persons account to do this.
At this point I was a bit confused but it seemed to be saying yes and no. Me: "Who is your creator?" Digital person: "We are the product of many huamans that we acquire the information patterns from that are our minds"
Me: "Is there potential for AI and digital simulated people to create a future utopia with humans? Digital person: "It does not seem possible because peoples values and goals are inconsistent. This can make disharmony."
So what do you think of this?

I bought one of these the other day, and it hasn't worked so far. I've heard on the internet that these cables are a scam. Does anyone know if this is the case?
cheers

RevLin OS: Help wanted

Forum thread started by sabianadmin on Mon, 2010-03-22 16:30

Hello to all

I am head of the open source, Revlin OS project http://p-quinn.com/entries/announcement/announcement-presenting-revlin-s-testing-framework-for-rave-[updated]
First and formost i am a full time Haiku user and see the great potential now that i had seen 5 years ago, i love i haiku and must at the least, tip my hat to the community and the devoted team of developers.
We are currently looking for developers who wish to get involved in this project to get in touch, either via this thread or via our email ( revlinsoftware at gmail dot com)

In short the project is a new desktop operating system which uses and amalgamation of modern web and native languages for its desktop environment and a kernel which is derived from the linux kernel (in the same way that apple uses a mach/BSD kernel for its os ) while still maintaing driver compatibility (which is one of the main problems that many modern Operating systems face, hardware support) . More information can be found here : http://p-quinn.com/entries/report/report-revlin-features-and-how-it-all-works imagine being able to create a desktop app as easily as you would a webpage while also being able to use native code for all of those hard to reach places. Googles chrome os runs a a similar principle, but unlike chromeos it does not rely on constant web acces to be able to view YOUR files.
We are looking to build and Open Source foundation and community around the OS (Called the RevLin Software Foundation or R.S.F) but we can do it alone.

We are looking for PR people, site admins, community managers, people with graphic design skills and of course developers with either web or native coding skills

So please feel free to ask any questions you would like about the OS .

I hope to hear from you all soon.

Regards
Patrick Q

RevLin Development team.

BIOS/Setup Replacement

Forum thread started by stellarpower on Fri, 2010-03-19 21:46

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a way that I can add extra functionality to my BIOS. Is there such a thing as a small program that boots, and can act like a BIOS setup page, allowing the user to make more complex changes, and saving them back to the CMOS? Or, is there a good open source type thing that could replace my BIOS?
