Linux scheduler

Forum thread started by tonestone57 on Mon, 2010-11-22 04:02

I found this interesting and thought I would share.

Linux currently is using CFS (Completely Fair Scheduler)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Completely_Fair_Scheduler

Con came out with BFS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_Fuck_Scheduler

BFS was created to improve responsiveness on Linux desktop by providing lower latency. So, you could run multiple applications at same time without them stalling out. BFS could only handle upto 16 logical cores before taking performance hit. CFS works with 4096 logical cores.

A comparison of CFS versus BFS:
You should search for "BFS vs. CFS Scheduler Comparison. Taylor Groves, Jeff Knockel, Eric Schulte" because I had trouble posting the link.

Anyways, I believe the 200 line changes were made to scheduler to give similar or better performance to BFS:

pls someone send me a e-mail when...

... there are more threats with real topics than "... and let us do it not the way the crappy linux do it ...", "linux is crap", "linux is not an desktop OS" and stuff like that.

Really whats wrong with you guys? Haiku isn't finished yet and there are still many things missing and you just say that linux is crap?

Linux is great, i can do alot of work with it. It has alot of very usefull software and some greate features which would greate if there would be used in Haiku (sure there are many things haiku should't copy).

And pls don't say "hey if you like Linux better than stick with it!!!", it's true i like Linux more than Windows, and i like to use it for real work.

But why do you think i use it that often? *

So pls stop writing "linux is crap" on every secont threat, it is anoying and it's not helping Haiku to become more Popular!

No one likes trolls!

My 'Build My Own PC' Ideas!

Forum thread started by Paspie on Tue, 2010-11-09 18:14

I have had this plan on the cards for three years now (with specs constantly changing, of course) so I thought I would show it to some here to see what you think. I've recently changed some devices to be compatible with Haiku!

CPU: AMD Phenom II 545 (3GHz)
MB: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3
RAM: 3GB, 240-pin DIMM, DDR3, PC3-8500
VC: ATI Radeon X800 XT 256MB
SC: Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
HD: 40GB SATA (quality or model not priority)
Case: Antec TX635 (Beige)

And here's the stuff I'm saving from old PC:

DVD/CD Drive
3.5" Floppy Drives (2!)

And here's the stuff I'll plug in to the PC.

Monitor: NEC Multisync LCD175VXM+ (Beige) or Cornerstone P1460
Keyboard: Ceratech Accuratus 260
Mouse: Ceratech Accuratus 1320
Mat: Haiku Mousepad :)
Speakers: Creative Gigaworks T20 Series II

Only one final thing: the PSU. I have no idea what kind of PSU Wattage I'm looking for because many of the items (even if I search thoroughly) don't have the wattage rating on the specifications. I think I'm goin' for a 750W.

only english spoken?

Forum thread started by Ulys on Sun, 2010-10-31 14:22

Hello,

my english knowledge is a little bit outdated, even though reading is not the main problem...
Is there any possibility to pose more complicated questions in german language?

Many thanks and best regards

A story related to operating systems (not directly haiku).

Forum thread started by cipri on Sun, 2010-10-24 15:23

I think it's a shame, that an article about Linux, opens source, operating systems.... was censured. It has nothing to do directly with Haiku, but still Haiku is connected to Linux and also it is placed in the category "off topic". You need not be the same opinion as the author, but to delete it, is a little too much, and also not in the spirit of open source. It may contain mistakes, as good as every article contains mistakes, for example also the most important article of Edwin Hubble contained very big mistakes and still nobody censured his paper.

The story is partly informative, but also partly funny. If you should not like something that is written there, don't get mad because it's bad for your health :-) , try to keep your internal balance :).

As a rehabilitation of the author of the mentioned article, I put again the link to this article/story, so that people who are interested can read it.

It's an article, that tries to give rational arguments, and which has decent vocabulary and which is also partly funny.

Why Linux is not the best for your desktop?

UPDATE: I remove this becouse its nothing to do with Haiku... and its unfriendly with open source..

More Flipbook questions

Forum thread started by kuecker2 on Sun, 2010-10-17 18:04

I am repositing this again so the inquirey stands on its own. Thank you so much for the information on the download. I have downloaded it I see that the images were printed not using inposition printing. Now for the more specific request. I need to know if anyone actually used this to create flipbooks at the time or before Jan 2005. Specifically the following. Did they use a standard desktop printer? Did they use 8-1/2" x 11" paper? Was the paper uncut (not perforated)? I believe all of those things are implied in the article. Here is the big question - did anyone tweak the program to use inposition printing where the pages could be stacked, cut into row cuts then stacked, turned and recut sand stacked so at the end of the cutting process the pages were in proper order. And reaching even more did they use an automated cutter - especially a business card slitter. I would be happy to explain what I need to anyone or how critical this is to a number of small business owners who are going to be prevented from continuing business if we can't prove prior art. This really is a big deal to many people. Thank you in advance for any assistance or information.
